Pitching Mish-Mash Spells Dodgers' Doom

The Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the Atlanta Braves 9-5 in 12 innings, evening the series at a game apiece. The Dodgers were cruising along with a 5-2 lead until Chad Billingsley hurt his hamstring running the base-paths. Hong-Chih Kuo was brought in, but without being able to warm up in the bullpen, he gave a large chunk of the lead back after surrendering a two-run homer to Kelly Johnson. LA nursed the lead going into the ninth, and with Jonathan Broxton on the mound, he gave up a single to Garret Anderson that scored Nate McLouth with two out to tie the game. Things were quiet up to the 12th inning, with Scott Elbert coming in to get the final two outs of the frame with two runners on despite being penciled in for the start on Sunday. Yunel Escobar singled to plate Anderson, and Ryan Church stuck the nail in the coffin with a three-run homer. Casey Blake had his own three-run blast, and Russell Martin had three hits and a run scored.

Jason Schmidt was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to pain in his right shoulder. Infielder Tony Abreu was called up to replace him. Abreu hasn't been on the big-league club since the 2007 season.

Schmidt's Woes Continue as Dodgers Fall

The Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1, dropping the best-of-three series. The Dodgers had an early advantage after Rafael Furcal hit a lead-off homer, but the offense stopped their, collecting only four hits for the rest of the game. Felipe Lopez had three hits and two runs scored for the Brewers, and Ryan Braun hit a two-run double that gave Milwaukee insurance. Jason Schmidt could not escape the fourth, leaving the bases loaded with two outs after already giving up two runs.

Schmidt Leads Way to Dodger Victory

Jason Schmidt cruised to his second victory, allowing only one base hit in six innings of work. Andre Ethier had a three-run homer which was more than enough, and Rafael Furcal drove in a run. Orlando Hudson scored twice, and Russell Martin had two hits and a run scored. Ethier capped it with another RBI. The Braves had only three hits in the entire game, with Chipper Jones reaching base three times, twice by walk.

George Sherrill made his Dodger debut, inheriting a two-on, no-out situation. He struck out the side, allowing only a walk.

Dodgers Can't Make Up Ground Against Marlins

The Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the Florida Marlins 8-6, dropping the series two games to one. Florida roughed up Jason Schmidt for five runs, then tagged Jeff Weaver for three more runs to take an 8-0 lead. However, the Dodgers tried to come back, scoring four in the sixth and two in the ninth, and had the tying run at the plate in Matt Kemp, but he popped out to end the game. Andre Ethier had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, and James Loney drove in three runs. Russell Martin had a two-run home run, and Rafael Furcal tripled and scored a run. Hanley Ramirez had two hits and three RBI's for the Fish, and Jorge Cantu doubled twice. John Baker scored two runs and reached base three times.

Blake DeWitt was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque in order to make room for the return of Hong-Chih Kuo. Since Kuo is on the 60-day disabled list, the Dodgers must make a corresponding move to clear space on the 40-man roster.

Dodgers Make Most of Schmidt's Return

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 in what was Jason Schmidt's first start with the Dodgers since 2007. Schmidt gave up three runs in the first inning, but that was all as he cruised through the next four to earn only his second win with LA. The Dodgers helped his cause by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, and never trailed after that. Jonathan Broxton collected his 23rd save of the season. Russell Martin had three hits and scored twice, and Andre Ethier doubled, homered, scored two runs and drove in two runs. Manny Ramirez had a home run, and Casey Blake had a double and two RBI's. Brandon Phillips had three hits for the Reds, as well as a run-batted-in and a run scored.

In order to make room for Schmidt on the 25-man roster, Scott Elbert was optioned to Triple-A. Eric Milton was transfered from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.

Dodgers Complete Comeback Against 'Stros

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Houston Astros 4-3, splitting the series two games apiece. Houston opened up with a three-run lead after the third inning, but the Dodgers scratched back for two runs before tying the game in the seventh on two errors by pitcher Alberto Arias. In the eighth, Matt Kemp homered with two out to give the Dodgers the lead for good. Jonathan Broxton rebounded from a tough outing yesterday to get his 22nd save. Kemp also doubled and scored all four runs, and Brad Ausmus doubled twice, driving in Kemp both times. Andre Ethier had three hits, and Rafael Furcal had an RBI. Michael Bourn doubled and scored a run for the Astros, and Geoff Blum hit a two-run homer.

Orlando Hudson injured his left wrist after bumping into Astros pitcher Russ Ortiz while running to first. It is the same wrist that Hudson underwent surgery on after he injured it last season. However, the Dodgers are saying the injury was sustained in a different area, and it is not serious. He is listed as day-to-day, and will have X-rays.

In addition to Jason Schmidt, who will make his first start since 2007 tomorrow against the Reds, two other Dodgers are on the verge of returning from the disabled list. Hong-Chih Kuo is making progress in his rehab starts, and Doug Mientkiewicz is ready begin his rehab and could be back in a matter of weeks.

Kershaw's Gem Helps Dodgers Beat Astros

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Houston Astros 5-2, preventing their first three-game losing streak of the season. Clayton Kershaw was dominant, shutting Houston out for seven innings on just two hits and one walk. The bullpen struggled though in the eighth, and Jonathan Broxton loaded the bases in the ninth, but he struck out the side and earned his 21st save of the season. Orlando Hudson had three hits, including a triple, scored twice and drove in a run. Manny Ramirez doubled and Matt Kemp had two RBI's and a run scored. Chris Coste doubled and scored a run for the Astros, and Jason Michaels drove in a run.

Before the game, the Dodgers announced that Jason Schmidt will be activated on Monday, where he will start that day against Cincinnati.

Dodgers Mirror History with Win

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Oakland Athletics 5-4 in 10 innings, their third victory in a row. The Dodgers took an early 2-0 lead, but Jason Giambi hit a three-run homer that put Oakland up by one. One out later Bobby Crosby hit a solo-shot that gave the A's a 4-2 lead. However, LA came back as they scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game. The contest entered extra-innings, and with Orlando Hudson at third and two outs, Matt Kemp singled to win the game. The matchup with Oakland evoked memories of the two teams' meeting in the 1988 World Series, with many similarities between this game and Game 1 of the series: The Dodgers taking a 2-0 lead, a homer giving the A's the lead, LA fighting back to keep themselves in the game, and a walkoff hit to the right-side with two out. Kemp also doubled, as did Casey Blake, Rafael Furcal, and James Loney. Hudson had two hits and scored twice, and Blake collected two runs and two RBI's. Furcal scored a run. Former Rocky Matt Holliday scored a run for Oakland, and Kurt Suzuki had two hits.

Mitch Jones made his major-league debut, striking out on a full-count. Jones has been a journey-man minor-leaguer his entire professional career, but got his first real opportunity to appear in a game after the Dodgers optioned Jamie Hoffmann to the minors. Because Jones was not on the 40-man roster, Jason Schmidt was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.

Walk-Off-Walk Gives Dodgers Win over Angels

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5-4 in 10 innings, their 30th win of the season. The Dodgers were in an early hole after Torii Hunter hit a 3-run homer to give the Angels a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth. However, LA came back, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning, and tying up the game in the eighth on an RBI-single from Casey Blake. Juan Pierre walked with the bases loaded in the 10th to get the Dodgers the victory. Andre Ethier showed signs of life, getting a single and a double and scoring twice before leaving the game with an injury. Russell Martin also doubled and singled, plus he drove in two runs. Blake doubled and singled twice, and James Loney had a single, double, a run scored, and an RBI. Juan Rivera had three hits for the Angels, including a solo-homer, and scored twice.

Andre Ethier had to leave the game after he split open the toenail on his right big-toe. His condition is uncertain.

Jason Schmidt was hit in the head by a line-drive in a rehab start with Albuquerque. The injury is not serious.

Jonathan Broxton pitched two scoreless innings to receive his fifth win of the season. His five wins are second on the team behind Chad Billingsley's six.

Roster Moves: DeWitt Stays, Lindblom Goes

The Dodgers made more roster moves in preparation for the season opener. They sent Josh Lindblom, Brian Mazone, Juan Castro, Erick Threets and Luis Maza to the minors, specifically sending Lindblom to Double-A to be a starter. Blake DeWitt made the major-league roster, as well as Will Ohman, Ronald Belisario, and Ramon Troncoso. Doug Mientkiewicz is expected to make the roster tomorrow, but first the 40-man roster needs to be worked out so that he, Belisario, and Ohman can join the roster. Jason Schmidt was put on the 15-day disabled list, and Tanyon Sturtze was sent to the minors.

Dodgers News: No A for Effort for Kershaw, Progress with Ohman, and Weaver Gets More Innnings

The Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the Oakland Athletics 9-5, their 18th loss of the spring. Clayton Kershaw got roughed up for seven runs, six earned, in four innings, and Ramon Troncoso gave up two runs on four hits in one inning. Guillermo Mota pitched a perfect inning, and Jonathan Broxton had a scoreless outing. Andre Ethier had a double, RBI, and run scored, and Manny Ramirez had a hit, walk, and run scored. Matt Kemp had a two-run double, and Rafael Furcal doubled as well.

Jeff Weaver pitched in a minor-league game instead his scheduled appearance against Oakland. Weaver is going to be used as a long-reliever and needs to stretch out the number of innings he pitches.

The Dodgers are expecting progress in negotiations with free-agent LHP Will Ohman, so much so that he could be ready to pitch by Opening Day. Ohman tried out for the Dodgers in a simulated game yesterday.

James McDonald is the favorite to become the club's fifth starter. McDonald has a spring ERA of 4.70, giving up 8 runs in 15 innings.

Jason Schmidt, Delwyn Young, and Claudio Vargas all will start the season on the Disabled List.

This was the last game the Dodgers will play at their new Spring Training complex, Camelback Ranch.

Manny Ramirez had a double and a walk, and Russell Martin singled and scored a run. Jason Schmidt pitched a solid first inning, then the wheels fell off as he gave up three runs without getting past the fourth. Hong-Chih Kuo became a victim of the wind, giving up a run in one inning. Corey Wade had a perfect inning, and Josh Lindblom increased his bid for the opening-day roster, pitching two hitless innings. Ramon Troncoso pitched a perfect ninth.

The Dodgers gave LHP Will Ohman a try-out today. Ohman pitched in a simulated minor-league game. The Dodgers are searching for a left-handed pitcher to put in the bullpen, and Ohman is searching for a job. Erik Threets and Brian Mazone, both with the team, are the current candidates to fill the void left by Joe Beimal.

Chad Billingsley is ready to make his scheduled regular-season start as he rehabs a strained right-groin. Billingsley pitched in a simulated game and experienced no problems. Billingsley will pitch Friday in an exhibition against Milwaukee at Dodger Stadium.

Mark Loretta continues to recover from his own right-groin strain. Loretta is optimistic that he can enter a game by Wednesday or Thursday, possibly in a minor-league game.

Claudio Vargas is recovering his sore right-elbow. The soreness is caused by inflammation as he has learned, and there is no ligament damage. Vargas can begin throwing by next week.

The Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the Seattle Mariners 8-6, their 13th loss of the spring. Clayton Kershaw pitched five-and-a-third innings, giving up only two runs and three hits while striking out six. Hong-Chih Kuo pitched a scoreless inning. Manny Ramirez had his first home run of Spring Training, and Casey Blake and Brad Ausmus also hit solo shots. Doug Mientkiewicz had a two-run double, and Andre Ethier and Orlando Hudson both hit doubles.

Jason Schmidt and Shawn Estes both pitched in a minor-league game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Schmidt threw three innings and gave up two runs. Estes relieved and allowed two unearned runs in one inning.

Jonathan Broxton returned to camp after spending the last few weeks with Team USA of the WBC. Broxton gave up four runs in less than an inning of work, getting the blown save and the loss.

Mattingly is seen as the heir-apparent to Torre after the two remaining years on his contract are finished. His son, Preston Mattingly, plays in the Dodgers organization, and is a non-roster invitee to Spring Training.

Dodgers News: Tough Thrashing, Schmidt Can't Pitch, and Manny Can't Play

The Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the Colorado Rockies 9-5, their seventh loss of the season. Manny Ramirez made his debut in left-field, but left the game after injuring his hamstring. Eric Milton and Claudio Vargas both had rough outings, Milton giving up four runs in his first inning of work, and Vargas surrendering three runs in three innings. Valentino Pascucci had a two-run homer, and Hector Luna had a double, RBI, and three runs scored. Russell Martin and Casey Blake both had doubles, and Juan Castro had a hit and RBI.

Manny Ramirez was lifted in the fourth inning for a pinch-hitter after Ramirez tweaked his left hamstring. He received the injury after trying to run down a double in the top of the fourth. The hamstring tightened on Thursday, keeping him out of the lineup against Korea. Ramirez will not play in any game tomorrow, and might not play Tuesday with Wednesday an off-day.

Eric Stults, a long-shot candidate for the fifth-starter spot, pitched three shutout innings in a B-game against the Chicago White Sox yesterday.

Justin Orenduff cleared waivers and was sent to the minors. Orenduff was designated for assignment after LA signed Manny Ramirez.

Jason Schmidt complained of full-body fatigue and was given an extra day of rest. He was scheduled to pitch in today's game, but will instead start tomorrow against Oakland.

The Dodgers will play two split-squad games tomorrow, one against Oakland and the other against Seattle. While Schmidt going against the A's, Hiroki Kuroda will start against the Mariners.

Xavier Paul had 3 runs, 3 hits, and 2 RBI's, and Blake DeWitt scored a run, got two hits, and knocked in two. Both James Loney and Matt Kemp had one hit, one run, and one RBI. Jason Schmidt gave up three runs in two innings in his first start with LA since 2007, but got the win after the Dodgers scored 10 runs in the first three innings. Eric Milton threw three scoreless innings after Claudio Vargas surrendered four runs.

Schmidt, in his first start since 2007, allowed three runs, two walks, and two hits, including a home run. He struck out two.

Hong-Chih Kuo made his spring debut in a B-game against the Chicago White Sox, pitching a scoreless inning. Kuo could pitch in a real game as early as Thursday.

Andruw Jones launched a home run off Claudio Vargas, his first homer of the spring. Jones played with the Dodgers last season, signing the highest salary contract in franchise history. However, Jones was a flop, with 14 RBI's and 3 home runs. The Dodgers reworked his contract so they could release him, and Jones signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers. He hopes to make the club in April.

Team Korea defeated Team Japan in their pool finale to determine the two teams' seeding in the next round for the World Baseball Classic. Korea will play the Dodgers this Thursday in an exhibition.

Mark Loretta had 2 hits, including a double, and knocked in a run, and Brad Ausmus had a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Rafael Furcal had a single and his first RBI of the spring. Clayton Kershaw threw two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings, and James McDonald gave up two runs in two innings. Scott Elbert had a rough outing, surrendering three runs in just one inning of work.

Casey Blake played third base for the first time after recovering from a hamstring injury. Blake previously played in the DH position in yesterday's game.

Jason Schmidt is scheduled to pitch in Monday's game against Texas. It will be the first game Schmidt would pitch with the Dodgers since 2007.

The Dodgers had a 7-2 lead going into the eighth inning, but surrendered 6 runs in the 8th and 9th that lost the game. Juan Pierre had two hits, two runs, and two RBI's, and Casey Blake had two hits to go with an RBI. Both Xavier Paul and Orlando Hudson had a hit, scored a run, and knocked in a run, with Paul getting a triple. A.J. Ellis caught two runners stealing in addition to getting a hit and RBI. Chad Billingsley threw three scoreless innings, and Shawn Estes gave up a run in two innings.

Orlando Hudson and Rafael Furcal turned their first double-play of the spring. Hudson and Furcal give the Dodgers one of the best middle infields in the league.

Jason Schmidt is close to making his Spring Training debut, and first actual game with the Dodgers since 2007. He can throw in either Monday's or Tuesday's game. Schmidt has pitched in intra-squad games, "B" games, live batting practice, and bullpen sessions.

Hong-Chih Kuo and Corey Wade are recovering from elbow and shoulder injuries, respectively. Kuo has thrown bullpen sessions and is scheduled to pitch in a B-game on Monday. Wade will pitch live batting-practice and can make his exhibition debut by next week.

Casey Blake made his return to the lineup after pulling a hamstring. He was in the DH position, and can return to third-base in a matter of days.

Editor's Note: Let's Get Down to Business

Now that the Manny Ramirez situation is over, and the slugging left-fielder is back in Hollywood, it's time for the Dodgers to start to seriously look at the team. No more waffling on the team's potential. It's time to study the Dodgers' players and their potential. And the best place to look is the pitching staff. While the staff has the most potential it's had in years, it also has the most risk. When a 25-year old Chad Billingsley is your ace, those are the kind of problems you can find. Billingsley can still most likely have another standout year, but if he becomes the ace of the rotation, the pressure can get tough. Hiroki Kuroda is a roller-coaster pitcher, who can take a perfect-game into the eighth inning one game and surrender 6 runs in his next. But with two playoff wins under his belt, Kuroda quickly becomes a key component. Clayton Kershaw is the wild-card in the rotation. A first-round pick who made his first big-league start at the tender age of 20, Kershaw embodies the 2009 staff: incredible potential to either astound or crash and burn. Randy Wolf can be a terrific influence, but only if he can stay off the DL. Then the fifth slot. After Chan Ho Park's success last season, the Dodgers look to past-their-prime pitchers to make a difference this season. Players like Jason Schmidt, Eric Milton, Claudio Vargas, and Shawn Estes all have had troubles in the last several years. If Schmidt can stay healthy, he becomes the favorite for the fifth spot. If not, it becomes Vargas's to lose. Other options still remain that the Dodgers really need to consider, including another past-his-prime pitcher: Pedro Martinez (above). With the Manny-drama over, pitching is once again a priority, one nobody can overlook.

Schmidt & Hudson Make Progress

The Los Angeles Dodgers started more serious practice Monday, playing their first intrasquad game. Jason Schmidt, who underwent two elbow operations over the last two seasons, pitched a scoreless inning and retired 3 of 4 batters. Schmidt hasn't pitched a Major League game since 2007. Other relievers threw as well, including closer Jonathan Broxton and left-handed hurlers looking to fill the hole left by Joe Beimal. Orlando Hudson also began practice on Sunday. The team still has concerns over his wrist. Last season in an awkward collision with Brian McCann, Hudson suffered a dislocated fracture in his left wrist and needed two different surgeries to repair the damage. Hudson participated in field activities and took batting cage practice.
